Ernest Fer embraces her son Captain John Fer, after he was held in captivity by the North Vietnamese for more than six years.
John Fer was born in 1937 in Long Beach, California. He was commissioned through the U.S. Air Force Academy and flew combat missions in Southeast Asia. He was captured and taken as a Prisoner of War, spending six years in captivity alongside John McCain. Upon release and recovery, he sought further education and continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement in 1990.
